The Class 86 entered service in the mid-1960s to run on the newly electrified West Coast Main Line. Unlike the newer Class 87, the 86’s maximum speed of 100mph is due to having less horsepower. Other differences from the 87 include the plated-over Headcode box and the distinctive triple windscreen.
