The line between Zwolle and Groningen was built in two stages. Zwolle - Meppel was built as part of the Netherlands’ State Line A, with Line C branching off to continue towards Groningen. By 1870, the connection between Zwolle and Groningen was complete.

With the advance of time, the route has been upgraded, not least of all in the 1970s with rebuilt stations and 1.5 kV overhead electrification. As of November 2023, the line through Hoogeveen station has been widened and realigned to increase the speed of intercity services.
