What to Expect from the Anniversary Edition

The anniversary edition of "DropZone" promises several enhancements while staying true to its roots. This blend of classic gameplay with enhanced graphics aims to bridge the generation gap, making it accessible and appealing to both veteran gamers and those experiencing it for the first time.

Upgraded Graphics : The game will showcase high-definition visuals that preserve the pixel art charm characteristic of the 1980s, yet are adapted to captivate on modern high-resolution displays. This feature allows switching between graphic modes in real-time during gameplay—a pioneering feature for a retro game remake.

Enhanced Controls : While the original game was celebrated for its precise control scheme, this new edition optimizes those controls for modern hardware, delivering a seamless gaming experience that honours the past while embracing the future. Play with a keyboard (not recommended) or a PC, Xbox, PS4 or PS5 controller.

Full Original Retro Mode : Experience the original game with its authentic graphics and sound, accessible at the press of a button during gameplay. Seamlessly switch between the classic retro look and the updated graphics version in real-time in game as you play. This feature is made possible by using the original source code provided by Archer Maclean.

ARCHER MACLEAN'S DROPZONE – 40th Anniversary Edition

You must succeed, the future of the human race depends on you alone!

It’s the year 2085. Only a handful of people have survived the robot wars that rocked the solar system.

In a final, desperate bid for survival, a star cruiser has been developed on Earth to transport survivors to a new star system. Space travel relies on rare Ionian crystals, mined on Io, Jupiter’s second Moon. The moon-base on Io is under constant bombardment from aliens!

Your mission: Rescue the men and get the precious crystals to the safety of the DROPZONE!

DROPZONE ADVERSARIES:

Planters and Androids: Planters are the worst aliens! They are machines that are controlled by androids that drift over the moon’s surface and rise over volcanoes and the moon base. They are relentless in their search for humans. When they attack, the android lowers itself down to the surface to chase the human. On landing, a planter will transform into a Nemesite.

Nemesites: When a planter has landed, it will become a deadly missile that intends to destroy you! It will endeavour to evade your pulse laser fire until it is close enough for a hit.

Antimatter: When all humans on the surface of IO are destroyed, the planter and the androids combine together, into a circling antimatter knot that is attracted to you! On IO, when an earthquake occurs, the entire moon becomes unstable. These erupting volcanoes spray deadly white-glowing magma rocks high into the atmosphere.

Spores: Spores are rather harmless...until they are triggered! When this happens they set free 4 single ‘Trailers’.

Trailer: Trailers are set free by spores and are hard to handle. While some will fly on unpredictable courses, other come directly towards you and persistently follow you. They are hard to destroy and need to be hit directly at the head of their body.

Blunderstorms: These storms are silent but deadly appearances of IO. They hover slowly in the upper atmosphere above the planet surface and sometimes cause molecular acid rain or release strong proton flashes after rumbling.

Nmeye : If you have survived an attack wave for too long, the aliens send their strongest weapon...an Nmeye. Nmeye’s watch each of your movements and sometimes flash. Their movements are irregular and when at full speed can move faster than you! They constantly release bombs and sequenced Nmeyes are harder to destroy.

Bombs : Planters, Nemesites, Antimatter and Nmeyes can shoot small bright bombs directly towards you. If you can match their speed, you can destroy them.

Volcanoes: Usually, the three volcanoes on IO are harmless, and only shoot small magma balls onto the surface. But when all humans are lost, they blast deadly white-glowing rocks into the atmosphere.
