GameChat, perhaps the biggest (only?) surprise from the Switch 2 reveal, is a new feature that lets a group of up to 12 people chat while playing games. GameChat doesn’t require a camera, but using one adds a webcam-like overlay and is the best way to use GameChat.

We’ve thoroughly tested Nintendo’s own camera, officially licensed third-party cameras, and a handful of normal webcams we had laying around. We’ve found a solution for anyone interested in using a camera with their Switch 2.

Considerations

Camera resolution: After testing these cameras extensively in multiple environments, we’ve determined that camera resolution is less important on the Switch 2 than Zoom meetings at work or FaceTime with grandma, especially in handheld or tabletop modes. But for those who plan on keeping the camera stationary, 1080p or higher resolution is ideal.

Microphones: All the cameras we tested included built-in microphones. Nothing in this guide particularly stands out with high quality audio.

GameChat overlay: Switch 2 features three GameChat overlay options, each of which are designed for different playstyles:

  • Standard is the default layout which offers a balance on screen between gameplay and chat.
  • Expanded Main Screen is a layout that limits the space dedicated to GameChat and expands your own game screen size.
  • Full Screen with no screen real estate for GameChat.

We tested each overlay option, in addition to playing titles that feature in-game camera feeds like Mario Kart World and Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV, to better understand how each camera performs at various sizes.

Our Top Picks

Nintendo Switch 2 Camera

Official camera, officially great

What we liked

+
Premium look and feel
+
Ideal height for many entertainment centers
+
Wide field of view

Things to know

Not portable

Nintendo’s official Switch 2 Camera features a sleek and thoughtful design packed with a 1080p sensor and wide-angle lens. While most webcams are designed to sit atop a monitor, this camera includes a tall stand which allows the Switch 2 Camera to tuck comfortably behind the dock without obstructing its view. The camera is adjustable and includes a built-in privacy shutter. An included USB-C cable plugs directly into the top USB-C port on the console.

There are plenty of other options at or around this price point, but we think if you’re looking to pick up a dedicated camera for Switch 2 GameChat, you’d be hard pressed to find something better.

HORI Piranha Plant Camera for Nintendo Switch 2

What we liked

+
Cute Piranha Plant design
+
“Mouth” doubles as a privacy lens cover
+
Hybrid design accommodates handheld and TV play

Things to know

480p resolution is poor for living rooms or low light
Pricier than otherwise identical non-Plant version

Accessory manufacturer HORI is well-known for bringing useful features and cute designs to market. Their Piranha Plant Camera features a lackluster 480p sensor tucked inside the mouth of a Piranha Plant which connects to the “planter” base through an adjustable USB-C cable. The design is both creative and useful as the plant itself can plug directly into the Switch 2 or connect through the included adjustable base.

We were initially quite disappointed in the 480p sensor but did eventually find it to be passable in the living room and more than adequate for a desk or with tabletop play.

What we liked

Super portable

Hybrid design accommodates handheld and TV play

Things to know

480p resolution is poor for living rooms or low light

This HORI USB Camera shares all the same features as the Piranha Plant Camera we tested, including a detachable base and the same disappointing 480p sensor, but is tucked in a much more compact enclosure which makes it perfect for travel or handheld play. That said, it’s difficult for us to recommend anyone buy this for use in a living room.

BYOW (Bring Your Own Webcam)

What we liked

+
Many popular webcams just work
+
Most likely already own one

Things to know

Not all webcams are compatible
Often not very portable

Many popular consumer webcams will work just fine with the Nintendo Switch 2. We confirmed compatibility with three that we had on hand including a Logitech C920e, Logitech C270, and Elgato Facecam Neo. Both Logitech cameras were plug-and-play, but the Elgato Facecam Neo required a firmware update.
